DRY LOOP / DRY DSL / NAKED DSL

What is it?

With the growing use of cell phones, and the rising prices of regular phone services, more and more people are cancelling their regular phone service to save money, but they are then left without a phone line for DSL Highspeed internet.

Dry Loop / Dry DSL / Naked DSL is a DSL service that does not require the user to have a traditional phone line.

  • One use for a dry loop is to provide DSL service to a place (business or residential location) which does not have an active phone line. Such a DSL connection is also called "naked DSL"
  • Many people and businesses now use a VOIP phone service in conjunction with dry loop (naked DSL) to bypass having to deal directly with a telephone company and instead can use a more customer friendly local Internet Service Provider such as Nextelle.

We are currently providing plans for dry loop services.

A dry loop (also known as a dry pair) is an unconditioned leased pair of telephone wire from a phone company. The pair may or may not have a dial-tone but in either case phone calls cannot be made to or from such a line.

What is DSL –

High Speed Internet?

DSL (digital subscriber line) is a type of technology that connects you to the internet over a telephone network. Nextelle’s DSL gives you a dedicated internet access line from our central office to your home that’s all yours.

Naked DSL

Naked DSL is a product that seeks to overcome people's distaste for having a landline connection, by conditioning the line to only carry a data signal, without an accompanying phone signal.

This means...not as much as people think. It's mostly a regulatory thing. It means that Telstra is required to provide a certain amount of telephone line capacity for 'Unbundled" access to the telephone line network. This means you will get broadband, but no voice service.

But this doesn't get rid of 'line rental' the way most people expect it does. After all, line rental pays for exactly that - renting the physical copper line for services. The voice service is included because it has to be, not because that's what your money is paying for.

So when Naked DSL eliminates the voice service, it doesn't eliminate the line rental cost - but it means that it can be classified differently and hidden from the customer.

Some people actually think this is a good deal.

Why?

Actually configuring Naked DSL is expensive, annoying and difficult for ISPs, thanks to several legal and regulatory quagmires. Soits often made more expensive to reflect that extra effort.

What many people don't seem to put together, is that you could just get the cheaper phone and internet bundle...and never plug in a telephone handset. For all intents and purposes, that's Naked DSL.

But I insist on Naked DSL...

There are some providers who, for whatever reason, prefer to provide Naked DSL. it might be to differentiate themselves from the rest of the market, or because they've worked out a deal that makes it cheaper for them. Or, it might be because they want to promote other services (specifically, VoIP) which might be on customer's minds if they're not getting a traditional voice service.
